Surprisingly, many struggle to recognise their own skin type. Knowing your skin type will ensure that appropriate products and skincare regime are chosen to keep the skin in the best condition and prevent problems from occurring.
Here are some guidelines.
When analysing your skin look at the following characteristics:
Colour
The paler the colour the more sensitive the skin will be, the more sallow the colour the more likely it is to be oily. If the skin is very red or becomes red very easily it is sensitive.
Texture
The thicker the skin’s texture the more oily it is likely to be, the thinner the skin the more dry or sensitive it is. If your skin feels rough then it is drier and if it feels smooth and moist then it is probably oily. The skin may also feel very coarse and bumpy if there are scars left from an acne skin condition.
Pore size:
The larger the pore size the more oily your skin is likely to be and the finer and less evident the pore size is, indicates a dry to sensitive skin type
Need more help?
In general there are FIVE basic skin types and they all have certain characteristics.
Normal:
Extremely rare! Smooth, even colour, soft and supple, neither greasy or dry. Typical in pre-adolescents before the onset of puberty. Often the skin then develops into one or more of the following types. Normal to ………..
Dry skin:
Dull looking complexion, may appear flaky in places, small pore size, no sign of oil on the skin, never get spots or rarely, feels tight after washing , fine lines appear prematurely particularly around the eyes
Oily and acne riddled skin:
Sallow in colour, shiny , thick texture, excess oil production ,open pores ,prone to spots and blemishes
Sensitive skin:
Pale in colour ,Translucent appearance May have areas of high colouring Prone to broken capillaries ,Easily irritated
Combination:
Typically an oilier central panel (Tzone), with some enlarged pores and normal elsewhere
A note about dehydration
This is a CONDITION and can affect ALL skins. Typically the skin will feel rougher and tighter. Many things can cause dehydration such as poor skincare, incorrect product choice, wrong diagnosis of the skin, the elements, alcohol and not drinking enough water. You may assume that your skin is dry, however, ensure you have analysed the underlying characterisics of your skin in order to decide.
Having decided what your skin type is, the next step is to choose the appropriate products for your combination, dry, oily, normal or sensitive skin which we will look at in the next blog!
